Research and science is about discovery. Pioneers such as Maria Thomas, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Radiation Oncology, and her colleagues at the Washington University School of Medicine, set out to examine whether the MRIdian system can offer breast cancer patients additional benefits compared to other radiation therapy approaches.

Dr. Thomas and her colleagues were aware that about 15% of patients do not complete their prescribed radiation therapy because of the 5-6 week daily commitment. In her study, Dr. Thomas, et al. reports that they reduced the overall treatment time to just five days. Not only were they able to reduce the overall treatment time for patients, but they also reduced the overall radiation dose to the surrounding healthy tissues (heart, lung, ribs and normal breast) by 52%! Dr. Thomas looked at cosmesis, which is a medical term used to describe the visual and physical effects of radiation therapy. Research is still early, but so far, no patient has experienced skin side effects (toxicity) and cosmesis was observed to be, “good to excellent” with little to no differences in the appearance and texture of the radiated area.
